The company was established as PT Kabelmetal Indonesia by Kabel und Metalwerke Gutehoffnungshutte AG of Germany on January 19, 1972 and commenced operation in 1974 with technical assistance provided by Kabelmetal Electro Germany. In 1986, PT Gajah Tunggal Mulia acquired a majority stake of the Company and remained majority ever since. The Company was publicly listed on both the Jakarta Stock Exchange and the Surabaya Stock Exchange in 1992. The Company is one of the qualified suppliers of Power Cables to PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) , the state owned electric company, as well as being a qualified supplier of telephone cables to PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk, the privatized state owned telecommunication company. kind of industry as well as ordinary individual customers purchased the cables through its national-wide chains of distributors and resellers. The Company also exports its products to South Asian, South East Asian, Middle East, African, European, Pacific and South American countries. In December 1999, the Company entered a three-years supply agreement with Cyprus Telecommunication Authority, making the Company the first Indonesian cable manufacturer entering a long-term supply contract with a foreign authority. In December 1994 the Company entered a joint-venture agreement with Pirelli Cavi Spa. Of Italy for Medium and High Voltage Power Cables and Optical Fiber Telecommunication Cables. The Company was awarded ISO 9002 in 1995 for its cable production from SGS Yarsley International Certification Service Ltd. In July 1996, the Company was awarded ISO 9002 for its newly established aluminum and copper casting plants. In November 1997, the Company received ISO 14001 for its environmental management system and in 1998 it was awarded ISO 9001 for the design control of cable production. By the end of 1996 the Company changed its name to be PT GT Kabel Indonesia Tbk while keeping its well-known brand Kabelmetal for domestic market.
