In the early 70's Indonesia lost a brilliant international lawyer, but gained a maestro in the art of batik. Nursjiwan tirtaamidjaja born on april 15,1935 known these days as iwan tirta.The son's of indonesia's first supreme court judge, mr. Tirtaamidjaja, entered the faculty of law at university of Indonesia. "my father wanted me to become a diplomat, "said iwan who specialized in international law.Graduating with flying colors, a cum laude meester in de rechten, iwan taught for several years in his alma mater before he flew to new york, after winning the prestigious adlai d. Stevenson award in 1968. With degrees from the London school of economics and yale university, he spent 2 years working at the united nations headquarters in manhattan.Knowledge about traditional javanese courtiers Show more and life the courts of central java nourished his interest in javanese fabrics, notably batik. Stimulated by this rich cultural environment, a desire was born to document and preserve the art of batik. To accurately record the evolution of batik, museums were visited and weeks were spent in villages and towns collecting samples and historically retracing the origin of batik.Returning in 1970 from a stay in the united states, iwan decided to change career and embarked on a project of designing batiks for himself. This ultimately LED to the formation of his own batik company. Iwan tirta's creations have attracted great attention in the international world of fashion, due to the superb quality of the materials and the impeccably executed sumptuous traditional designs.
